Dedicated to producing project-ready construction workers, the Algonquin College Environmental Demonstration Centre for Construction Trades and Building Sciences will open in 2011 and house 2,500 full-time students, bringing together the College's trades, design and building sciences programs. The $79-million LEED Gold certified Centre will be a showcase for sustainable construction practices and become the industry hub for the construction and design sectors.
Their vision is to provide an environment in which students and practitioners can learn and where industry partners and the college can work together to promote rewarding and exciting career opportunities.
To this end, a Constructing our Future campaign is underway to raise $7-million. Already the provincial and federal governments have committed $35-million each, in addition to the land donated by the City of Ottawa, valued at $2-million.
Ron Tomlinson is a member of the Campaign Cabinet, and is responsible for coordinating fundraising efforts with the heavy construction sector. According to Ron, "The last several years have shown us that the construction and trades sectors are a strong, resilient option for career opportunities. It is important that the industry invest in recruiting and training new and existing employees. This will be key to the expansion of the heavy construction sector, and in particular, the continued success and growth of R.W. Tomlinson Limited."
